After a horrible crash killed two cherished young sportsmen on Monday evening, February 23, the Hinton and Jasper, Alberta communities are grieving an unimaginable loss.
Returning from hockey practice, 17-year-old Danica Hills and 18-year-old Kayla Peacock were driving when their car crashed into a semi-truck on Highway 16 roughly 10 kilometres east of Jasper. Two bright, talented, and much loved young women perished abruptly in the crash that occurred around 7:15 p.m., shocking and grieving family, friends, teammates, and the whole neighborhood.
Both Danica and Kayla proudly belong to the Jasper U18 Bearcats, noted for their commitment, collaboration, and competitive attitude on the rink. Driving at the time of the accident, Danica and Kayla came every practice and game with bravery, tenacity, and happiness. Their warmth, compassion, and free-spiritedness left impressions that would last off the ice as they were adored daughters, sisters, friends, classmates, and teammates. For those near them, their laughter, encouragement, and support were daily events; their absence has left a great vacuum in the society.
Recognizing the significant emotional toll this loss has had on the close-knit society, Harry Collinge High School shut down courses and provided grief counseling to pupils and staff in reaction to the disaster. Family, friends, coaches, and teammates are seeking one other comfort, recalling Danica and Kayla's energy, tenacity, and the happiness they brought into the lives of all who knew them.
Though officials are still looking into the causes of the accident, those who loved them continue to honor the way they lived—not the way their life ended. Their legacies will be their devotion to hockey, their loyalty to one another, and their empathy for those nearby.
Though tragically taken far too early, Danica Hills and Kayla Peacock will always be remembered as extraordinary young women whose light burned brilliantly in Alberta’s hockey scene and beyond. Their spirits, laughter, and love will still ring in the hearts of those who knew them, a permanent memorial to two lives lived with bravery, joy, and unfailing heart.
May their memories be a blessing; may the families, friends, and communities that loved them find solace and strength in their legacy.
