According to the Radford Police Department, after reports of a one-car accident, officers answered on February 25 at around 11:20 a.m. to the 10 block of East Street. Officers and emergency personnel started giving help right away upon arrival. Raccuia, the only passenger in the car, was declared dead at the scene despite their attempts.

Authorities have said that no more information will be made available at this time as the occurrence is still under investigation.

Middle infielder Raccuia played baseball for Radford University. A Radford High School graduate, he honed his game and passion for the game by also attending the PDG Academy in Fredericksburg. Baseball was firmly ingrained in his family; he bore his father's name, Joe Raccuia, who had worked as Radford University's head baseball coach for twelve years before retiring.

Teammates and coaches recall Joey as a committed athlete who brought intensity, concentration, and heart to the field. Starting his first year, he was at the start of what many thought would be a successful college life. The baseball team and the general campus community are feeling his death very much.

Originally slated to be held by Radford University beginning Friday, a three-game homestand. No decision has been made as of yet on whether those games would go as planned.

Thoughts and prayers are with Joey's family, friends, teammates, and coaches as the university and Radford grieve; this is an extremely trying moment. His legacy will be with the Highlander family.
