Officer Stephen LaPorta Passing and Tribute: Uxbridge Police Officer Tragically Hit While Offering Help

Officer Stephen LaPorta Death and Obituary – Officer Stephen LaPorta, aged 43, who served with the Uxbridge Police Department, sadly passed away early on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, while on duty on the northbound lanes of Route 146 in Massachusetts. LaPorta, a devoted member of law enforcement with a profound dedication to serving the public, was helping a motorist in distress near mile marker 5.6 when he was hit by a tractor-trailer. This tragic event transpired at about 12:40 a.m., amid hazardous conditions created by overnight freezing rain, which officers noted made the roadway akin to an “ice rink.”

Emergency personnel declared Officer LaPorta deceased at the scene of the incident. The motorist he was helping fortunately was unharmed, while the truck driver experienced minor injuries. Officials from the Massachusetts State Police, along with the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, are looking into the matter, and as of January 9, no charges or arrests have been reported.

A lifelong Uxbridge resident, LaPorta fulfilled his ambition of becoming a full-time patrol officer after his promotion in June 2024. Before this achievement, he served as a full-time dispatcher in Mendon for 17 years and worked part-time as a police officer. His professional journey was characterized by commitment, integrity, and a fervent zeal for ensuring public safety. LaPorta leaves behind his wife and their 13-year-old son, who now must endure the heartbreak of losing a cherished husband and father.

The local community has come together to pay tribute to LaPorta’s contributions. On Friday, January 9, a respectful procession with 25 police motorcycles and various cruisers transported his remains from the Medical Examiner’s office in Westfield back to Uxbridge. A wake is planned for Wednesday, January 14, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at St. Mary’s Parish in Franklin, with a private funeral and burial for his family and close friends taking place on Thursday, January 15, at 11 a.m.

In honor of his sacrifice, Governor Maura Healey has commanded that flags at all state facilities be flown at half-mast. LaPorta was also commemorated by the Boston Bruins during their game on January 8, where a moment of silence was observed and a personalized jersey was displayed. The Greg Hill Foundation has created a special fund to assist the LaPorta family in navigating this challenging period.

The passing of Officer Stephen LaPorta highlights the dangers that law enforcement officers encounter on a daily basis. His enduring legacy of service, commitment, and community engagement will remain in the hearts and minds of his colleagues, friends, and all those impacted by his kindness.
