The community of Abbotsford, located in British Columbia, experienced upheaval Friday afternoon due to a deadly shooting that occurred within a residence in west Abbotsford, an event that has rekindled concerns about persistent gang-related violence in the area. Law enforcement has confirmed that the deceased was Navpreet Dhaliwal, an individual well-known to police and previously recognized to be associated with the conflict involving organized crime in B.C.
According to police spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker, officers from the Abbotsford Police Department responded promptly to gunfire reports at a house situated in the 3200-block of Siskin Drive shortly after 12:35 p.m. Upon entering the home, officers found a man with severe injuries. Despite emergency procedures attempted on site, the man’s life could not be preserved.
Sgt. Walker mentioned that the residence was already known to the police and acknowledged that the victim had profound connections to gang-related activities in the Lower Mainland. Later sources identified the man as Dhaliwal, who had recently been the focus of a public safety alert issued by the Abbotsford police in August 2024.
This alert was issued following Dhaliwal’s release on bail as he awaited trial on serious criminal charges. At that time, police warned the public that Dhaliwal, along with another individual from Abbotsford, Anmol Sandhu, presented a considerable risk to community safety. Both individuals were set to live in west Abbotsford, creating alarm for both investigators and residents.
Dhaliwal and Sandhu emerged as prominent figures in a significant drug trafficking investigation that began in late 2022. Throughout this investigation, law enforcement executed several search warrants at locations in Abbotsford and Surrey, seizing numerous kilograms of illegal drugs, including fentanyl and cocaine, as well as large sums of cash and firearms. The materials collected during this operation prompted law enforcement to launch Project High Table, a specialized initiative exploring claims that the two individuals were planning a specific targeted murder.
In February 2024, both Dhaliwal and Sandhu were apprehended and faced charges related to conspiracy to commit murder, alongside drug trafficking and weapons charges. Dhaliwal was eventually granted bail in June 2024. Court records indicated that the Siskin Drive location where the shooting took place was listed as a guarantee for his release.
After the event, the typically tranquil neighborhood saw a notable increase in police activity. Siskin Drive was blocked off from Sandpiper Drive to Stellar Court for several hours while investigators secured the site and collected evidence. Residents described the scene as heavily protected, filled with an array of police vehicles and officers surveying the area.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has assumed control of the inquiry and is collaborating with Abbotsford police to clarify the events surrounding the shooting. Officials have not disclosed any information regarding potential suspects and are urging anyone who has information to come forward as the investigation progresses.
