 The Summer Science Program (SSP) community is mourning the passing of Mike McKay, a respected alumnus, dedicated volunteer, and longtime Chair of SSP International’s Board of Directors. His death marks the loss of an influential leader whose unwavering commitment to education, mentorship, and service helped shape one of the nation’s most respected academic enrichment programs. Across generations of alumni, students, and colleagues, Mike will be remembered for his thoughtful leadership, genuine humility, and belief in the transformative power of opportunity.

Mike’s connection with the Summer Science Program began in 1978 when he attended the program as a student. Although his experience ultimately led him to pursue a different professional path, he often reflected on SSP as one of the defining experiences of his life. Rather than simply introducing him to science, the program helped him better understand his own strengths, interests, and ambitions. That lesson became central to his philosophy that education should empower young people to discover who they are and confidently pursue their unique futures.

His dedication to SSP grew into decades of extraordinary service. Beginning in 2002, Mike volunteered in numerous leadership roles, including board member, treasurer, admissions committee member, and ultimately chair of the board. Throughout those years, he played a vital role in strengthening the organization's long-term vision, supporting strategic growth, and expanding opportunities for talented students from diverse backgrounds. His leadership combined careful planning with a genuine desire to ensure every decision served future generations.

Outside his volunteer work, Mike built an exceptional professional career grounded in academic excellence and business leadership. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Harvard College and completing an MBA with top academic honors at the University of Chicago, he spent more than 30 years at Bain & Company. There, he became a founding partner of the firm's Private Equity Group before later sharing his experience with graduate students as an MBA instructor at Brandeis University. Colleagues admired both his expertise and his willingness to mentor others throughout his career.

Mike's enthusiasm extended well beyond the classroom and boardroom. He embraced an active lifestyle that reflected his determination, optimism, and appreciation for life's challenges. Cycling, skiing, and golf were among the activities he enjoyed most, and he consistently used those passions to support meaningful causes. Just months before his passing, he completed his annual long-distance cycling fundraiser from Boise to Portland, raising support for cancer research and demonstrating that service remained at the heart of everything he pursued.

Those fortunate enough to know Mike often speak first about his character rather than his accomplishments. He possessed an uncommon ability to listen, encourage, and inspire. Whether mentoring a student, welcoming a new alumnus, or collaborating with colleagues, he treated every conversation with sincerity and respect. His curiosity about people, combined with his generosity and optimism, created lasting relationships that extended far beyond professional or academic settings.

Mike McKay leaves behind a legacy measured not only by the organizations he strengthened but also by the countless lives he influenced through mentorship, leadership, and genuine kindness.
