The community of Montana and countless family members, friends, former students, and admirers are mourning the passing of Pearl Burke, a beloved librarian, educator, artist, and devoted wife whose life was marked by learning, compassion, creativity, and unwavering dedication to her family.

Born Pearl Pai Chu on August 16, 1933, in Beijing (then commonly known as Peking), Pearl later relocated to Taiwan with her family, where she graduated from National Taiwan University. Driven by a passion for education and knowledge, she moved to the United States to pursue a master's degree in Library Science at University of Missouri.

It was while working in the university library that she met James Lee Burke, the acclaimed novelist who would become her husband and lifelong companion. At a time when interracial marriage remained illegal in Missouri, the couple traveled to Iowa to marry on January 20, 1960. Their union became a remarkable partnership that endured for more than 66 years, built on love, perseverance, and mutual respect.

Pearl devoted much of her professional life to education, serving as a school librarian for more than three decades. Known for her dedication to literacy and learning, she inspired generations of students through her encouragement, patience, and enthusiasm for books. Colleagues and former students remember her as someone who believed deeply in the transformative power of education and who worked tirelessly to foster a love of reading in young minds.

Outside of her career, Pearl was a woman of many talents and interests. She was an accomplished watercolor artist, a poet, an avid reader, and a passionate traveler who embraced opportunities to explore different cultures and perspectives. Her curiosity about the world and her appreciation for art, literature, and human connection enriched the lives of everyone around her.

Family remained at the center of Pearl’s life. She was a loving wife, devoted mother, cherished grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend whose kindness and generosity left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know her. Her support played an important role in her husband’s literary journey, while her own accomplishments reflected a life lived with purpose and grace.

As loved ones gather to remember Pearl Burke, they celebrate a life defined by resilience, wisdom, creativity, and compassion. Though her passing leaves an immeasurable void, her legacy lives on through the countless students she inspired, the family she loved, and the many lives she touched throughout her remarkable journey.
